Sokola Kaki Gunung
2016 - 2020
This program targeted the Madurese ethnic group living in and farming coffee and seasonal crops on Perhutani-owned plantations at the foot of the Iyang mountains, Jember. Administratively, their settlement is located in Sumbercandik Hamlet, Panduman Village, Jelbuk District, Jember Regency. While they were described as "illiterate in Latin script," the residents were mostly literate in Arabic due to the strong tradition of Quranic recitation in the community. Many residents felt it was sufficient to send their children only for Quranic studies, not to formal school, or allowed them to drop out. The distance to school and rocky roads also deterred children from attending school. Their contact with the outside world came mainly through selling crops, and many residents also migrated, making Latin literacy skills necessary. Sokola Kaki Gunung participants included children, teenagers, and adults. The applied literacy phase focused on economic empowerment by improving processing and marketing of the community's main commodity, coffee.
